How Many Players Is Big Walk? Co-op & Crossplay Explained

The answer

Big Walk supports 2 to 12 players in online co-op. There is no single-player mode and no local split-screen — everyone plays on their own device, online, in the same shared world.

House House frames the flexible headcount as a feature, not a compromise: 2 players is "a focused co-op experience", while 12 is "an absolute mess". Both are exactly what the game is for.

Which group size is best?

Based on how the developer describes the design, each lobby size has a distinct flavor:

  • 2 players — the focused walk. Quiet, coordinated, and the best way to actually absorb the world and its story beats. Ideal for a first playthrough with a close friend.
  • 3–5 players — the sweet spot. Enough people for tools to be shared around and jokes to land, few enough that nobody gets lost for ten minutes.
  • 6–12 players — the party mode. Chaos, cowbells, and somebody kicking the binoculars into the ocean. House House calls it "an absolute mess" and means it as a compliment.
First session recommendation

Start with 3–5 players if you can. You'll see every mechanic — voice fading, gestures, tool-sharing — without the herding-cats overhead of a full lobby.

Proximity voice chat: the signature system

Big Walk's defining mechanic is its proximity voice chat. Per the official feature list, voices:

  • Fade across distance — wander off and your friends literally hear you drift away,
  • Echo down corridors and valleys,
  • Muffle through walls when you're separated indoors,
  • Crackle through walkie-talkies when you switch to radio contact.

Some challenges deliberately make talking impossible — that's when the game's gestures (pointing, waving, "flailing wildly") and toys like whiteboards and laser pointers become your vocabulary.

Voice chat troubleshooting

Mic issues are the most common launch-week complaint for any proximity-chat game. We're collecting confirmed fixes in a dedicated voice chat guide — check the news page for when it goes live.

Crossplay & platforms

Cross-platform multiplayer is confirmed on the Steam feature list. Big Walk is on PC and Mac via Steam; IGN additionally lists PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions. The developer hasn't yet published a full matrix of which platforms can play with which — we'll update this section the moment that's official.

What we can say for certain: PC and Mac players share lobbies, and the game is explicitly designed for playing "with your friends on other platforms".
