Big Walk Map — How to Unlock & Navigate the Island
How to unlock the map
To get a map in Big Walk, you must complete the Red Tower. Polygon, IGN, and Insider Gaming all confirm the same process: collect five reward items from puzzles around the island, place them at the Red Tower's receiver console, obtain a key, then run it through key cutters outside the tower.
IGN's guide describes: "Solve puzzles around the world so you can slot five beans into the slots. A key will become available. Bring it down to the entrance of the Red Tower and insert into the key hole nearby. It'll shave down the key. Follow the arrow on top of the machine to find the next key slot. Eventually, you'll reach a big blue tunnel."
Inside the blue tunnel, you'll find the map room. This unlocks the "Big Views" achievement (Insider Gaming, YouTube).
The two maps
The map room contains two types of maps, plus additional tools:
- Large room map: A massive 3D map of the entire island on the floor. It shows all landmarks and towers. Polygon notes "you won't be able to see where the challenges are located or if you've completed them," though Insider Gaming reports a flag system marks completed puzzles — this remains unconfirmed across sources.
- Portable foldable map: Found on a red table in the room. Can be carried in a backpack or side satchel. Shows coordinates using longitude and latitude grid lines — essential for coordinate puzzles like the 4166, 1899 challenge.
- Additional tools in the room: Three laser pointers and a compass are also available on the upper wall.
Navigation tips
The island is hand-crafted (not procedurally generated) with distinct visual zones. GameSpot's review notes: "Every inch of the world feels intentional." Key navigation landmarks include the colored towers (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Black), the drawbridge, various beaches, and mountain areas.
Use the portable map's coordinate grid (longitude numbers on the sides, latitude numbers on top/bottom) to locate specific areas. The GPS device (found near the Green Tower in a red frame) shows real-time coordinates and can be attached to a player's backpack.
Transport unlocks
Three major transport systems unlock as you progress, reducing backtracking:
- Chairlift (Green Tower): Connects upper and lower island areas.
- Train (Blue Tower): Runs around the island, providing fast travel between key zones.
- Tunnels (Yellow Tower): Connects distant island sections underground.
whisperofthehouse.com recommends the progression order: Tutorial → Red Tower and Map Room → Green Tower and Chairlift → Yellow Tower and Tunnel → Blue Tower and Train → Black Tower. "This is not the only valid colored-tower order" but it minimizes backtracking.
